A German Easter Tradition

Happy Easter!! This is one of my favorite holidays in Germany! Decorating Easter eggs is a little bit like making Christmas cookies, very specific to each family. Most families have a platter of carefully dyed and painted hard boiled eggs, which are the center of the Easter breakfast. In my family it is tradition to “peck” eggs when it is time to eat them. Everyone picks the egg they want and a partner to challenge. You hold the egg tightly in your hand with the tip sticking out (it is important which side you choose, can you tell where the air bubble is?) Then you peck the other persons egg. The goal is to keep yours whole but crack the other persons egg. The problem is if you are the egg pecking king, you don’t get an egg to eat and have to keep pecking until yours breaks too. Besides decorating the hard boiled eggs, many people decorate the shrubs in their front yards and branches inside their house with hand painted, carefully blown out eggs hung from beautiful ribbons. These eggs can be very intricate and art pieces in themselves.
