Do you ever think about “Food-miles”? How far each item on your dinner plate traveled? I do, and sometimes I have to confess the result is quite shocking, especially in winter. The other night I made my comfort dinner; Tomato soup with grilled cheese. My favorite canned tomatoes come from San Marzano Italy, nearly 6000 miles away from Mono Lake! That realization really made me treasure every single bit of my soup and made me reconsider having it again any time soon. Especially in the winter months it is so easy to forget about seasonal and local food. Some days it feels like a treasure hunt walking around the grocery store looking for items from at least within our own large state. I can’t wait for summer when our dinners often contain only things from right here in the Mono Basin! Until then, thank you for buying locally made bread (with local eggs, California milled flour, California almonds, but far traveled bananas from Mexico)!
